What is the Social Enterprise Qualification (SEQ)?
Social Enterprises are businesses set up to make a positive social or environmental change.
SEQ is a way in which learners can create positive social change whilst learning some business basics. It enables learners to make the social change important to them, whilst gaining a qualification that will boost their employability. SEQ is about developing the social entrepreneurs of the future, and giving learners the skills and confidence to make change for themselves and others. It’s not just a qualification; it’s a means for change.
SEQ can be achieved at Bronze or Silver levels:
Bronze – QCF Level 2 Award in planning and delivering one off social enterprise activity
Silver – QCF Level 2 Certificate in planning and delivering ongoing social enterprise activity
Once you have trained to deliver SEQ, the costs per learner are:
• Bronze – Level 2 Award on the QCF- £20 per head
• Silver – Level 2 Certificate on the QCF – £25 per head
• Silver Top Up (for students who have already completed Bronze) Level 2 Certificate on the QCF – £20 per head.
This provides you and your learners with:
• A Mentor Handbook
• Use of online resources and materials
• Access to a global network of schools, youth groups and social enterprises engaging with SEQ
Discounts are available for in-house training and also if you inspire another setting to purchase SEQ.
Case study: Students at Plymouth College identified a clear aim; to help families and communities tackle food waste and reducing the amount that goes to land fill.
To do this they have developed the Ecofeeder, a birdfeeder made from recycled and FSC wood, painted with low VOC, UV paint to attract birds without damaging the environment. The Ecofeeder holds lard cakes, also being made by Plymouth College out of the recycled fat from fast food restaurants. Profits raised from sales are being put back into developing the business with a portion being donated to the Wildlife Trust.
Developing, making and promoting the Ecofeeder the group has really embraced social enterprise and made it their own, developing an innovative product that is really turning heads. Having already sold over 400 Ecofeeders and made nearly £4000 in revenue, the group won a Young People’s Social Enterprise of the Year Award this March and were invited to the national awards ceremony at the O2 arena in London to profile their product.
Through the international pilot of SEQ we’ve seen inspirational social enterprises developed by some really innovative people!
